Setting sights

I've started my newest project, and I've thought about (thanks for a dear friend) adapting my story to a role-playing game. I think that would be fun, but the question (the one posed by my friend) at hand was weather or not I should create a gaming system of my own. There are so many out there already. Some that do a wonderful job at what they do. Some are more flawed than others. Some use charts while others don't. Some are simple while others are complex. Most of them are well suited for the games they were crafted for.
That led me to think about the similarities between the system and the setting. Most have an overall focus that can be discarded but usually helps to shape the mechanics. The very feel of the game matches up with the story that game tries to convey or the mechanics blends into the background, almost invisible. So what would I like to do? What would the newest player in the world like to do?
That brings up the next big quandary. Players nowadays, what are they going to be into? What will they like? Does Hasbro have the ideal right when it comes to their game?
